What I do

Performing

I’m a pianist and music director specialising in the improvised live-scoring of silent film. I work solo and in a variety of collaborations, including as a founder member of Frame Ensemble. I also work as a music director with solo singers, choirs and community music groups.

Researching

My music PhD investigates the practice of improvised silent film accompaniment, and I continue to research both contemporary and historic accompaniment practices. I have a particular interest in early twentieth century understandings of improvisation.

Producing

I’m the Artistic Director of Northern Silents, the UK’s leading producer and presenter of live-scored silent film. Northern Silents creates programming for a growing portfolio of clients, from theatres and arts centres to concert halls and festivals.
